Meat and Livestock Australia Ltd (MLA) undertakes a range of research and development, information and marketing programs. These programs, designed specifically to benefit meat and livestock producers, processors, exporters, and retailers, include animal health and welfare, sustainability, production efficiency, product innovation, eating quality, meat safety, issues management, market access, and domestic and overseas promotion of Australian beef, sheepmeat and goatmeat.
The company also manages strategic planning for the cattle, sheep and goat industries.
MLA is funded through cattle, sheep and goat producer levies, joint funding from the processing and live export sectors and, in the research and development area, through Federal Government dollar for dollar matching funds.
Overseas, MLA has bases in six regions, with offices in Japan, Korea, the US and Bahrain, and representatives in Europe and South East Asia. These offices and representatives help promote Australian red meat in overseas markets, facilitate trade to those markets, and provide on-the-ground support in market access issues.
