Australian Red Meat Export

Australia is the largest beef and sheepmeat exporter in the world. In 2001 Australia exported a total of nearly 950,000 tonnes of beef and veal and 285,000 tonnes of sheepmeat.

Australia is recognised as the world’s largest exporter of Halal red meat.

The Middle East accounted for almost 20% of Australia’s total sheepmeat exports in 2001 and has historically been a market for Australian sheepmeat. Saudi Arabia is a major market for our mutton products, while United Arab Emirates is an attractive market for Australian lamb.

The largest four markets for Australian beef - the US, Japan, South Korea and Canada - accounted for over 85% of Australia’s total beef exports in 2001. The Middle East accounted for almost 1% of the total in 2001, despite growth in recent years.
